Chronic Tinnitus Has Been Associated With A Common Practice — And Mine Stopped In Under Two Weeks

Published: Tuesday, July 25, 2026

I used to think ringing in your ears was just something that happened as you got older.

Background noise. Harmless. Nothing anybody could do about it.

Then it stopped being background noise.

It started as a faint high whistle in my right ear, the kind you notice only in a quietroom.

Within a few months it was there in the supermarket, in the car, in the middle of conversations.

And it never, not once, switched off.

"The morning I realised the ringing wasn't going away."

The Slow Creep Into My Life

First it was the whistle. Then my right ear started feeling full — like I had water in it after swimming, except it never drained.

Sounds went flat. My own voice echoed inside my head.

I kept asking people to repeat themselves, and I got very good at nodding along to conversations I could only half hear.

And every single night, the moment the house went quiet, the ringing got louder. That was the part nobody warns you about.

"The moment the house went quiet, the ringing got louder."

The Habit I Never Suspected

Here is the part that made me feel foolish: I had been cleaning my ears with cotton buds every single morning for about fifteen years.

I thought that was good hygiene. It is the opposite.

A cotton bud is narrower than the wax it meets. It lifts a little out and presses the rest deeper, until it compacts into a solid plug pressed up against the eardrum.

And an impacted plug is one of the recognised — and reversible — causes of tinnitus. Cerumen impaction affects roughly 1 in 20 adults, and clinical guidance from the American Academy of Otolaryngology lists tinnitus, hearing loss, fullness and itching as its typical symptoms.

Tinnitus charities say the same thing in plainer language: wax buildup can cause or worsen ringing, and clearing it often quietens it.

The mechanism is almost mundane. The plug blocks sound from reaching the eardrum, and the hearing system compensates by turning up its own internal gain. That amplified internal signal is what you hear as ringing.

"There’s Not Much We Can Do About Tinnitus"

I finally booked an appointment.

The nurse looked in with an otoscope for about four seconds and said, “That ear is completely blocked with wax.”

She syringed it. I walked out and it was like someone had taken headphones off my head. The ringing dropped to almost nothing.

Then she said the sentence that changed everything:

“It will build up again in a few months. And whatever you do, stop using cotton buds.”

$95 a visit. Twice a year. Plus weeks of muffled hearing and ringing while I waited for an appointment.

There had to be a way to do the same thing at home.

"My scan in the clinic"

The Discovery That Changed Everything

I asked her what she had actually used on me. She said it was irrigation — warm water, aimed along the canal wall, floating the plug back out the way the ear already cleans itself.

Not drops. Not picks. Not suction. Just controlled warm water.

Water irrigation is one of the standard first-line methods clinicians use for impacted cerumen, listed alongside curettage and micro-suction in guidance from the Mayo Clinic and the Merck Manual.

A week later a friend showed me the device she keeps by her bathroom sink. Same principle, adjustable pressure, sealed collection cup.

The brand she used: Hyggear™ Ear Cleaner.

I ordered it that night.

I Was Sceptical — Until The First Rinse

I filled the tank with body-temperature water, fitted a soft tip, and chose the lowest setting.

It honestly feels like a warm shower inside your ear. No scraping. No pain. Nothing goes deep — the tips have wide shoulders so they physically cannot over-insert.

On the second pass, on the Pulse setting, something soft came out into the cup. And the whistle dropped by half in about ten
seconds.

The collection cup is the part nobody talks about. Nothing runs down your neck.

"Sixty seconds at my own sink — the same method the nurse used on me."

Week 1: The Ringing Started Backing Off

I did a rinse every second evening that first week. The changes were hard to argue with:

  • The full, underwater pressure was gone by day two
  • The whistle faded from constant to occasional
  • My own voice stopped echoing in my head
  • The itching in the canal stopped completely

And for the first time in nearly two years, I fell asleep without lying there listening to my own ear.

Week 2: Quiet

By the end of the second week, the ringing was gone on most days.

Not masked. Not distracted-away. Gone — because the thing driving it had physically been removed.

I am not going to pretend this cures every case of tinnitus. It does not. Noise damage, medication and blood-pressure causes are real and they need a clinician.

But wax is the one cause that is mechanical, common, and completely reversible — and it is the one almost nobody checks first.

"Quiet, for the first time in nearly two years."

Months Later, I Just Keep It Clear

Here is where I am now:

  • One 60-second rinse every couple of weeks
  • No clinic appointments, no waiting lists, no €95 fees
  • No cotton buds in the house at all
  • Hearing sharp, ears clear, and silence when I want silence

The buildup never gets to the blocked stage anymore, so the ringing never gets a chance to come back.

If Your Ears Are Ringing, Please Don’t Just Accept It

I’m not a doctor. I’m not promising miracles.

But I am someone whose life was quietly wrecked by a noise nobody else could hear — and who found out the cause was something that took two weeks to fix.

If you are:

  • Hearing ringing, buzzing or whistling that never stops
  • Feeling blocked, full or underwater in one ear
  • Asking people to repeat themselves
  • Still using cotton buds every morning
  • Or being told “there’s nothing we can do”

Then get the wax ruled out first — with the same method the clinic uses, at your own sink.

"I can hear my park birds again without ringing in my ears."
